6 Weeks Young!

I cannot believe that 6 weeks has come and gone. It still seems like a blur due to the continued lack of good sleep, but Kai has changed tremendously since coming home from the hospital. Grandma Pong continues to be amazed by how different Kai looks everytime she sees a new photo posted. Kai is growing faster than ever and fits into many of his 6 month clothes already. His umbilical cord still has not come off, making sponge baths a regular event in the Pong household.

This morning I took Kai out for our normal morning walk. Usually he starts wailing about 5 minutes in, prompting me to pop a pacifier in his mouth so I don't wake up all the neighbors. Today, however, Kai fussed for a few seconds and fell right to sleep! Like I always thought babies did. I was so stoked (it's the little things that help me through the day). Another awesome thing is that I am wearing some non-maternity jeans (FINALLY!) and I couldn't be happier to have something different to wear. It's been almost a year since this pregnancy/baby fiasco began...time sure flies!

Our little sack o' potatoes

Today was Kai's 1 month doctor appointment with Dr. Bravo. Yong and I made a friendly bet yesterday about how much our little guy weighed (I guessed 9 1/2 lbs and Yong guessed 10 1/2 lbs)....and we found out today that our little Kai is not so little after all! He weighed in at 10 lbs 12 ounces; no wonder my back feels broken! He measured 23 1/4", placing him in the 95th percentile...he's going to be one tall kid. Now that I know how much he weighs, I feel every ounce in my arms. The doctor calculated that Kai is gaining about 2 ounces per day and at that rate will be 15 lbs at 2 months. No wonder I feel like a milk factory--I am one! Kai made a great impression on Dr. Bravo by flashing him a smile at the end of the appointment. Dr. responded by saying, "You've got a sweet boy here". We'll have to try to remember that at 2am when Kai is kicking and screaming inconsollably.

Smiling makes the world go 'round

Today is Kai's 4 week old birthday. The time has flown and dragged by all at the same time. He is so much bigger than he was 4 weeks ago and it seems like the days that have passed since his birth have been 1 extremely long hazy day. Sleep has been very hard to come by recently; still working on getting that gas to go away! We tossed the schedule out the door for now...newborn Kai prefers to eat and sleep on his own time (duh)..Yong and I were just trying to be optimistic.

So the smiling has commenced and it couldn't be more glorious. Getting a smile in return for mine makes all of the screaming and fussiness worth it. Smiling doesn't always happen this soon for newborns, so we're hoping Kai will have advanced to vacuuming and doing the dishes by the end of next week. :-)

Duck and Cover!

Today was a day that created a lot of laundry. Kai has been spitting up pretty frequently since yesterday, making all of his clothes and burp cloths smell like sour milk (yuck!). Poor little guy can't get comfortable. The doctor let me know to cut back on the raw veggies and dairy, so hopefully he'll be relieved soon.

This afternoon I went to change Kai's diaper in the middle of nursing him to wake him up a bit. He often falls asleep while eating. I took precautions to make sure not to get peed on and proceeded to wipe and change the diaper. Kai had other plans for me. Out of nowhere (well, not really nowhere), there was a stream of pee hitting the wall behind Kai, spraying furniture and himself. I was so startled, I screamed, which in turn startled Kai into unleashing a spray of poop that not only went all over the carpet, but also went all over my pants. Of course, Kai started screaming for more food at that precise moment. Since his clothes were all wet with pee and my clothes were all covered in poop, I stripped us both down and rushed to feed him. Minutes later, I sat thinking how different this Monday afternoon was from a month ago.

Welcome to the life of Kai!

Thank you for visiting The Life of Kai! I thought this might be a good way to update interested grandparents, aunts, uncles & friends of what's going on with Kai. Be prepared to read about peeps and poops and diddlydoops....as there isn't much else in Kai's daily activities yet. We are currently working (painfully) on getting Kai on a schedule. It's day 3 and he seems to be 50% there. Breaks my heart to let him cry in his bed!! Fun moment of today was when Kai was falling asleep, smiling and giggling. I know it's all involuntary at this point, but completely adorable nonetheless. We can't wait for his smiles to be directed at us instead of at his dreams.
